Remelt Process Options: VAR/ESR

Republic Special Metals, Inc. produces both Vacuum Arc Remelted (VAR) and Electro Slag Remelt (ESR) steels and alloys in finished bar stock, semi-finished billets or ingots suitable for further hot working.

Our manufacturing processes, inventory levels and business systems are designed to provide lead times significantly shorter than industry standard.

VAR and ESR Remelted ingots are forged on our 3700 ton press equipped with a fully integrated track bound manipulator - ensuring reproducible reduction cycles can be achieved on each order.

Finishing capabilities include grinding, lathe turning, milling and saw cutting. Ultrasonic inspection (both contact and immersion methods) is available on site.

Controlled processes provide a consistent product - start to finish!

Advantages of VAR

• Oxygen and hydrogen contents are reduced to very low levels - thus minimizing oxide-type non-metallic inclusions, as well as possible flaking or embrittlement due to hydrogen.
• Directional soldification of the ingot is achieved (from bottom to top) thus reducing segregation.
• No refractory materials are present to cause contamination of the melt.
